Not everyone will understand your journey. That’s fine. It’s not their journey to make sense of. It’s yours.

12 ways to find encouragement.

The following is an exchange the took place last night as a result of someone commenting on this post. While what I wrote was just a comment (a long one), I shared it with someone who said, “That’s not a comment, that’s a blog post.” So I’ve decided to share it here in case any finds any value in it.

Miss Discouraged wrote:

From what I see about this blog. I saw a bit of myself. As far as I am concerned, I’ve been discouraged for so long. its starting to become extremely hard to find that part of myself again. Any help or advice to remove discouragement? I’ve been trying hard to pick myself up and again and still start believing that I can still achieve my dreams.

Hey MD —

Without knowing your story, this is what I’d say…

Ok, I could write more, but I’m losing steam (it’s late here)… lemme know if this is at all helpful or if there’s something specific you’d like to hear my thoughts on. Like I said, this is pretty general because I don’t know your story.

In any case, I think on some level you know you’re not going to stay discouraged forever — which is GOOD. :) Sometimes we just need a little kickstart to break our thought patterns from what we don’t want to what we DO want.

“Can’t”. You keep using this word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Achieving personal goals: Be patient and disciplined

Achieving personal goals: patient and disciplined

Be patient. Think long term and stop seeking immediate gratification or shortcuts. Small changes add up to big changes over time. Strive for progress, not perfection.

What you want MOST is often far more important than what you want NOW — especially after the moment of desire passes. Repeatedly exercising your control over the urges or bad habits that are working against you helps provide you with a certain mental toughness. Over time, things you used to think were difficult become much easier.

Achieving personal goals: Comparison is the thief of joy

Achieving personal goals: Comparison is the thief of joy

We are often unaware of the struggles that others must face in order to achieve success. As Lee Honda put it, “Success is 99% failure.”

Know that whatever it is you wish to accomplish, no two people, businesses, or ventures are exactly the same. You can’t help but bring a unique perspective to your endeavors and a unique combination of talents and skills.

So even if the field is crowded, understand that you can succeed, too, but in order to do so, it is essential that you put in the effort and take action to achieve your goals.

Getting discouraged at others’ accomplishments and giving up because you feel you can’t compete gets you nowhere.

Constantly comparing yourself to others is waste of energy. There will always be someone better at something than you are.

A wise person once said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” Don’t let the success of others discourage you from your own endeavors or make you bitter. If someone has done or is doing something you would like to do, let it inspire you and be an indicator that you, too, can achieve great things.

Achieving personal goals: Focus on the positive

Achieving personal goals: Focus on the positive

How you see the world is largely a matter of what you focus on.

What kind of world do you want to live in? Do you want to live in a world that is hostile and dangerous, or one that is friendly and warm?

To see more of what you want in life, remember to focus on what you want to see rather than on what you don’t want or don’t see. Look for and focus on those things that you can like and appreciate in others, not on what you don’t like.

You will find the world to be a much friendlier place by being positive — and discussing what you like — than by being negative and complaining about what you don’t like.

We find what we seek. By remembering this at times when you might otherwise find yourself being negative, your attention on the positive will attract more of what you are looking for in life.

Achieving personal goals: No excuses!

Achieving personal goals: No excuses!

Everyone has weaknesses and limitations. Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone faces failure and unfairness in life at one time or another. You are not alone. By focusing on your strengths and making the most of what you DO have, you can do great things. What are the things keeping you from achieving your goal? Are they truly things you cannot work around if you truly wanted to? No one is going to hand you your results. You have to work for them. Be stronger than your excuses.

Achieving personal goals: Focus on what you CAN do

There are always things you can’t do. But there are always things that you CAN.

There are always things beyond your control. But there are always things within it.

You’re never as stuck as you think you are.

Anyone who ever accomplished anything had limitations. If you truly want something, you’ll find a way.

Achieving personal goals: Take personal responsibility

Achieving personal goals: Take personal responsibility

Don’t play a victim. Free yourself of trying to present yourself as perfect to others. Life can be very hard at times and everyone faces hardship at one time or another in life. And everyone makes mistakes and has setbacks. You are not alone. Take responsibility for your life — your “situation” — and take action to change it (if that’s what you desire).
