Not everyone will understand your journey. That’s fine. It’s not their journey to make sense of. It’s yours.

The path towards a better life

Excerpt from my book:

If you want to get on the path towards a better life, you must decide that taking steps down that path is more important than the things that are keeping you from it.

You must no longer allow yourself to be held back by a lack of discipline, a lack of resources, a lack of motivation, or a lack of initiative. And you must no longer allow yourself to be held back by fear.

Light your own fire

When one’s motivation is dependent on external sources, the moment those sources are absent is the moment one’s motivation begins to fade. This is because motivation is a state of mind.

And if a particular state of one’s mind is dependent on the availability of things it doesn’t always have control over, it can be difficult to attain the state of mind associated with those things when they’re unavailable.

This is why it’s important to learn how to develop the mental discipline necessary to be one’s own source of motivation. When one is able to motivate themselves, they light a kind of fire that can burn indefinitely.

The key to self-mastery

Your ability to listen to and take action based on your inner voice — regardless of how you feel, other influences, or temptations you face — is the key to self-mastery.

Self-control

Excerpt from: Self-discipline

Like a muscle, the more you exercise self-control on a consistent basis, the stronger you get.

As your self-control increases, the more you gain the ability to direct your life in a manner that is congruent with the true you.

The more congruent your actions are with your thoughts and feelings, the better you feel about yourself and the decisions you make.

Every time you feel good about a decision you make, it raises your self-esteem and your self-confidence. You also reinforce in your mind what you are capable of and it makes it less difficult to make similar decisions in life.

Resist the urge to always explain yourself

The fact is – for any number of reasons that are often beyond our control – people don’t always see us in the same way we see ourselves.

While it’s natural to care about how you are perceived, it is an exercise in futility to try to explain yourself or justify your actions to everyone who doesn’t get you. Not only is this often a waste of time, it will likely make you seem insecure on top of everything else.

People will often draw conclusions about others based on what they imagine or guess to be true rather than what actually is. They may even presume to know what motivates a person or declare with confidence that they know why that person took a specific course of action. When, in fact, these conclusions can paint a picture that doesn’t at all reflect reality. And that’s OK.

It is perfectly acceptable to ignore the fact that other people have the wrong impression of you. Because, with few exceptions, what other people think about you will have absolutely no impact on your life unless you choose to let it.

When you truly know who you are, it won’t matter so much that other people don’t. What matters is focusing on who you want to be and what you wish to accomplish with your life regardless of those who don’t get you, what you’re doing, or what you wish to do.
