Not everyone will understand your journey. That’s fine. It’s not their journey to make sense of. It’s yours.

Success isn’t just about accomplishment

Success isn’t just about accomplishment. It’s also about how the things you do in your life motivate & inspire others to do something motivating & inspiring in theirs.

It’s about helping people. It’s about adding value to other people’s lives. It’s about making a positive difference, no matter how small.

Success has a lot more to do with what isn’t immediately visible than it does with trophies, awards, wealth, or material things.

Self-control

Excerpt from: Self-discipline

Like a muscle, the more you exercise self-control on a consistent basis, the stronger you get.

As your self-control increases, the more you gain the ability to direct your life in a manner that is congruent with the true you.

The more congruent your actions are with your thoughts and feelings, the better you feel about yourself and the decisions you make.

Every time you feel good about a decision you make, it raises your self-esteem and your self-confidence. You also reinforce in your mind what you are capable of and it makes it less difficult to make similar decisions in life.

Making progress is more important than making excuses

While you are still waiting to find an easy way (or a perfect time), someone else is already getting results because they decided making progress is more important than making excuses.

Diminishing the effectiveness of negativity

In a world of negativity, every positive act you perform, no matter how small, not only helps to set a good example, it helps to diminish the effectiveness of those who spew hate and negativity.

If you want to do some good then literally do some good. Make a positive difference in someone’s life. Do the things you wish more people would do.

What you do for people and the moments and memories you help create can literally change a person’s life (including your own).

It’s OK to be concerned, angry, and upset about the state of things. It’s OK to speak out against hate, intolerance, and injustice. It’s OK to stand up for what you believe is morally right. Just be sure that when you do so, you do it in a way that has a positive impact and doesn’t just add to the negative energy that you oppose. Convert your positive (or negative) energy into positive action. Lead by example by performing actions that you can be proud of no matter how you are feeling.

Make sure children and adults alike can see that there is far more to the world than the things that get shown in the news. That there is far more good in the world than hate. And far more people wishing to create something beautiful than those who wish to destroy it.

Some people may be beyond reach, but there are still countless individuals of all ages and all walks of life in the world that could use the guidance of your good example.

Don’t ever let your disapproval for anyone or anything turn you into someone you don’t want to be.

Lessons Learned from The Path Less Traveled by Zero Dean

Do more of what makes you healthy

Seen in a meme:

“Do more of what makes you happy.”

While I agree with the sentiment, I would counter this by saying:

“Do more of what makes you healthy.”

Not everything that makes a person “happy” makes a person healthy. Too much of a good thing can have negative consequences.

Never underestimate the brain body connection. Often, when one falls out of balance, the other follows. How one treats their body is how one treats their brain.

Because at least some degree of happiness stems from feeling good about one’s self, it stands to reason that the better one feels about themselves, their decisions, their life, and their health, the greater their sense of well-being.

Happiness is more likely to manifest itself in one’s life as a result of seeking a healthy mind, healthy body, and healthy spirit than it is by seeking the instant gratification of doing only more of what makes them happy.

Do more of what makes you happy healthy (and happiness will follow).

The path to success isn’t a straight line

Don’t stop working towards a goal just because the path to it isn’t as direct or as easy as you hoped it would be. It is often the lessons one learns on their journey that are exactly what one needs to complete it.

It’s better to be your genuine self…

Excerpt from: Don’t live your life wearing a disguise.

its-better-to-be-your-genuine-self-and-have-fewer-zerosophy-zero-dean

It’s better to be your genuine self and have fewer of the right kinds of people in your life than it is to surround yourself with those who only accept you as long as you conform to their idea of who you should be.

Use your free time wisely.

What you do in your free time determines what you’ll be doing when you don’t have a choice.

If you’re not using your free time to direct your life where you want it to go, don’t expect to arrive at your desired destination when the rest of your time is spent being told what to do by other people.

There will always be someone better at something than you are

We are often unaware of the struggles that others must face in order to achieve success. As Lee Honda put it, “Success is 99% failure.”

Know that whatever it is you wish to accomplish, no two people, businesses, or ventures are exactly the same. You can’t help but bring a unique perspective to your endeavors and a unique combination of talents and skills.

So even if the field is crowded, understand that you can succeed, too, but in order to do so, it is essential that you put in the effort and take action to achieve your goals.

Getting discouraged at others’ accomplishments and giving up because you feel you can’t compete gets you nowhere.

Constantly comparing yourself to others is waste of energy. There will always be someone better at something than you are.

A wise person once said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.”

Don’t let the success of others discourage you from your own endeavors or make you bitter. If someone has done or is doing something you would like to do, let it inspire you and be an indicator that you, too, can achieve great things.

You were meant for greatness.

You are stronger, smarter, and more resilient than you think. You are capable of achieving far more than you believe.

You were meant for greatness — like all of those who have achieved it.

But it takes persistence. It takes determination. It takes facing your fears and doing that which is hard & necessary, instead of what is quick and easy. It takes skipping the mythical shortcuts & using your imagination as a map and preview of life’s coming attractions.
